“When I got married I moved out of state. Whenever we would visit family in Utah, my parents would insist that we go to Burly Burger because it’s so good,” recalls Hayley. “So every time we would visit we would always stop. When we moved here, I felt Idaho Falls would be a good market for it.”
The menu is loaded with burger, chicken and even fish options, but what makes your choices even more fun are the entree names. As the Burly name suggests, they don’t offer wimpy little burgers either. The Duke, The Farley and The Paul Bunyan are probably the three most popular offerings according to Hayley, but The Mr. T, The Rock and The Belushi are favorites as well.
“Farley is good if you can’t decide between having a chicken or a burger because you get both,” adds Hayley. “The Hoff is probably the most ordered chicken sandwich, but we also offer salads, a kid’s menu and a wide selection of fun sides.”
The Idaho Falls location opened about a year and a half ago, and the owner has been pleased with the support.
“We’re still new, but it’s going well,” says Hayley, who partnered with her parents Dennis and Cristen Hurst on the business. “The community has been super welcoming and we’re doing better than I ever would have anticipated, so we’re happy about that. We have a new, fresh take on burgers. If people want quick fast food that’s not our vibe. Customers can come in, get great tasting fresh food, and sit down to enjoy eating in our restaurant.”
Crispy Cones took off after appearing on Shark Tank, a popular show where entrepreneurs pitch a panel of tycoons to invest in their business proposals.
“Moroni wanted to open up a business for a really long time, but we couldn’t decide which direction we should go,” explains Karla. “One day as we were discussing possible options while driving to our friend’s house in Rexburg, we saw the headquarters for Crispy Cones and knew we had our answer.”
Turns out Moroni had already been messaging with the founder after he visited the Logan store in Utah.
“When I stay in Logan, I always see the cone logo from my hotel,” says Moroni. “I love ice cream, so I decided to stop by. I tried it, and love it. So I decided I was going to find out more about the company.”
In March the Corrals opened a Crispy Cones store in Idaho Falls, which has been an instant hit with the community seeking a unique dessert place. What makes them different from other places? It’s their passion.
“We make our delicious cones with lots of love. I think that’s one of the most important things people need to know,” says Karla. “We train our employees to take their time because they’re not easy to make. Everything made here is all about the guest experience. You’ve got to give them a good product so what they see on the menu is what they’re going to get.”
The cones are taken off the grill, covered in cinnamon and sugar or specialty powder, and filled with creamy spreads, gourmet soft-serve ice cream, delicious toppings and a decadent sauce on top.
“Everything is fresh, it’s not like the cones come in a box,” adds Moroni. “The strawberries, the toppings—we change them every night. We use quality ingredients and we customize our ice cream so it’s extra creamy.”
Besides a full menu of delicious desserts, a special new cone flavor is released each week on a limited basis, which keeps regulars coming back. They also offer catering and “experience boxes” with their ice cream in containers and the cones in a separate box so it can be enjoyed later when you get home. You can also DoorDash these boxes, which have become a popular treat to send to family or friends.
What started in Rexburg as a tent stand on the side of the road is quickly spreading across our region and thankfully that includes a store here in our town. The Corrals recently opened a second Crispy Cones location in Pocatello, with plans to open stores in Boise in the future.
