“I

t’s kind of a big deal.” To this day, that simple phrase is burned in my memory. I was so oblivious to something happening so close to home. Before Idaho experienced a total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, my brother-in-law Tim called me. It was at least a year in advance if not earlier. He asked if he could stay at our house for the eclipse. He loves science and astronomy, so I was happy to oblige. Full confession: when he called about visiting us to see this solar thing, I had no idea what he was talking about. Looking back, I can’t believe I was so clueless.

I assured him he could stay with us, and even though I would most likely be at work on that day, he was more than happy to check out whatever this science thing was. I quickly forgot about his request and went on with my life. Then, as we got closer and of course everyone was talking about how cool the eclipse was going to be, I started paying a little more attention.

Our area began preparing for the influx of visitors who would come from miles around and from neighboring states to view the total solar eclipse. It finally occurred to me that this wasn’t just a science thing that only my brother-in-law was interested in. I remember talking to my wife and stressing the importance to her that this “thing” Tim is referring to is kind of a big deal. It’s safe to say that was an understatement of momentous proportion. She just laughed at me. I guess I was the only one who didn’t know how unique it is to be able to view a total solar eclipse without leaving your hometown.

I.F Gearing Up To Celebrate
A vibrant nighttime display of red, blue, and gold fireworks exploding over water. Large spherical bursts fill the dark sky above lower fan-shaped flares, casting dazzling, colorful reflections on the rippling surface below.
Our city on the river is preparing for another festive Independence Day as residents and visitors get ready to gather for a full day of patriotic activities, community events, and fireworks. This year promises to be something special as the country marks its 250th birthday.

The day will begin with the Greater Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce’s Liberty on Parade, a longstanding community tradition featuring marching bands, floats, civic organizations, businesses, and patriotic displays. The parade typically starts at 9am and draws spectators along the parade route through downtown Idaho Falls.

Following the parade, attention will shift to Snake River Landing, where Riverfest will offer a full day of family-friendly entertainment along the banks of the Snake River. The festival is scheduled to begin around 11am and will feature food vendors, live music, children’s activities, arts and crafts, and other attractions spread across more than 70 acres of riverfront park space. Admission to Riverfest is free, although some activities may require a fee.

The celebration will culminate with the Melaleuca Freedom Celebration, widely recognized as the largest annual fireworks display west of the Mississippi River.

The show, which is expected to begin shortly after 10pm, is visible from numerous locations throughout Idaho Falls, with Snake River Landing serving as the primary gathering area. Organizers anticipate attendance exceeding 200,000 people, making it Idaho’s largest annual public event.

City officials encourage attendees to arrive early, plan for traffic congestion, and take advantage of designated parking and viewing areas throughout the community. With the nation’s 250th anniversary falling in 2026, organizers expect this year’s celebration to be among the most memorable in the event’s history.

Why stepping stones and scenic routes are the way to go
by rebecca blackson | photo by brady l. kay
O

ne of life’s most beautiful truths is this: life can lead you to unexpected places—and often, that’s the best part. Idaho Falls resident Leslie Pincock knows from experience that small stepping stones can lead you to wonderful new opportunities.

From her job as the executive director of the Mayor’s Scholarship Program, to teaching fitness classes, to finding so much to love about the Idaho Falls community (including birding!), Leslie’s interests and opportunities have grown as she’s reached out into her community.

When the Mayor’s Scholarship Program began 15 years ago, Leslie joined as a volunteer. She was later invited to serve as vice president of the board of directors and eventually became the director. She explained, “It was just a natural progression from volunteer to board member to executive director.” And she absolutely loves working with young people. “I love the enthusiasm of these great kids because they are just so excited for life! It’s a privilege to be able to give these students the spotlight,” Leslie said.

Funland springs back to life

by rebecca blackson | photos by brady l. kay

With plenty of nostalgia, a sweeping renovation, and a tasty new menu, Idaho Falls’ classic little amusement park next to the Tautphaus Park Zoo is open once more. Channeling all the retro vibes and vintage charm from its heyday in the 1950s, Funland has been fully restored in the heart of the community where it’s always belonged.

“We’ve put in a tremendous amount of effort to make it feel like the same old Funland while updating everything to be completely safe and refurbished. It’s an investment in preserving the tender history of this place,” said David Pennock, executive director of the Idaho Falls Zoo.

Local business Rose Marie’s is dishing up an array of food such as fried pickles, mozzarella sticks, crispy chicken, and crave-worthy funnel cakes. What makes it different? It’s all gluten-free.

“I tell people, ‘You won’t believe it’s gluten-free!’” said Rose Longacre, the owner of Rose Marie’s Gluten-Free.

Rose Marie’s Gluten-Free is a family-run food truck and is located at 1480 North Woodruff Avenue. There’s a Chow Town Food Court across from the Hyundai dealership, and that’s where it’s at, along with other food trucks.

Smokin Fins voted top place to dine
by brady l. kay
It’s Monday afternoon, and even though this isn’t the couple’s usual routine day to dine at Smokin Fins, they find themselves sitting out on the patio in their favorite spot. To call Robert and Angie Griffith regulars would truly be an understatement. In fact, it’s safe to say they wouldn’t have just celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary if not for the role the downtown restaurant played in bringing them together.

The couple met at Smokin Fins on July 6, 2019. “I want you to know, I was very bold that night,” recalls Angie. “I came up and introduced myself after two classes of wine, so I was feeling a little brave with my friend encouraging me.”

Nearly five months later, when Robert decided to propose, he had the perfect place selected to ask the important question.

Patriotic Chocolate Covered Strawberries

W

ant something sweet that screams summer celebration without turning on your oven? These are it. These patriotic treats have only three ingredients and are ready in under 30 minutes. Plus, kids love helping dip and sprinkle, so it’s a fun activity if you need to keep little hands busy before the fireworks start.

Pick berries that are firm, ripe, and completely dry before dipping. Look for strawberries with bright red color and fresh green leaves still attached – these make for the prettiest presentation and will hold up better when coated. Medium to large strawberries work best since they’re easier to dip and handle, plus they give you a nice ratio of chocolate to fruit.

A remarkable milestone has sparked celebration across the Gem State: Idahoans have now completed more than 250,000 acts of service through the America250 in Idaho Service Challenge, and the momentum continues to grow as the nation approaches America’s 250th birthday on the Fourth of July. The challenge’s original goal was quickly surpassed, with more than 312,000 submissions recorded and additional acts of service pour in each day.

Launched by the America250 in Idaho Service Ambassadors, the challenge invited people across Idaho to serve their communities and record their efforts at IdahoKindness.com.

My Second Chapter
Katie Burke Headshot
katie burke
If you know me in real life, then you know I’ve been talking about starting my second chapter in life for about five years now. And you would be tired of hearing about it, mainly because my life looks the same as it did five years ago.

But I’m a changed woman. I’ve started Pilates. Not only have I started Pilates, but I’m going to class with my 27-year-old, 100-pound, blond-hair, blue-eyed coworker! I’m not blond, haven’t seen 100 on the scale maybe ever and I have at least two decades on her. Doesn’t this just sound amazing?

I told my sister that we were going to start working out together and she replied, “Oh, you’re doing Pilates with Jadine, huh?” Between her tone and the facial expression, the connotation was clear: What are you thinking, you-chubby-little-chipmunk you?

Katie: I mean, we have our wedding this summer and I need to work on me.
Sister: Wait, what do you mean “our” wedding?
Katie: Well, I’m going to be there. Jadine’s going to be there. Her fiancée will be there.
Sister: What?
Katie: Jadine’s getting married, I’m the coworker of the bride, it’s like this whole thing.
